Installation of the software :

Put the CD-ROM in the CD reader and the starting
will be automatic.

The program asks you on which hard disk and
in which sub-repertory you want to install the software.
( for instance :  C   then   Language )
Then click on Ok.

If you install two different versions of the software,
for example English-French and English-Spanish,
install them in two different repertories.

Before starting the installation you are advised to close the
active Windows applications (even those resident in memory,
like antiviruses for instance).
It is impossible to update the DLLs already used by other
applications.
The icons of the applications resident in memory are generally
visible on the right side of the Windows tasks bar
(the Windows tasks bar is the last line at the bottom of the screen).
To desactivate them, click on those icons with the right button
of the mouse.

Then wait a moment during the installation
(duration can vary according to the power of your computer).

Then a screen asks you to click
on "Finish the installation".

Once the installation is over you are advised to
start the computer again so that the programs are
managed correctly by the system.

In case the CD does not start automatically
a program (INSTALL.EXE) makes the installation.

With Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, NT, Xp :
    Press the Start button,
    choose Execute,
type  G:\INSTALL.EXE  and then press the ENTER key.
replace G by the letter corresponding to your CD-reader.

So as to install the software
it is necessary to have at least 20 free Mb
on the hard disk.

Starting of the software :

From Windows click on the software icon
or select the software in the list of the
installed ones.

The three windows of the software :

The software includes three windows :
- a main window containing the texts to translate,
- a translation window containing the translated texts,
- a revision window containing the sentences to translate
  and the translated sentences below.

THE MAIN WINDOW

The File menu :

This menu gathers the functions linked with the file maintenance.

New :

To work on a new text to translate.

Open :

To open an existing file to translate.

If the open file is in HTML, the HTML marks
appear in green.

Close :

To close the text in progress,
and empty the window.

Save :

To save the text in progress.

Save as :

To save the text in progress with another name.

Print :

To print the text in progress.

Exit :

To give up the software
and close all the windows.

The Edition menu :

This menu gathers the functions linked with the edition of the texts.

How to Copy-Paste :

To copy a text from one place to another.
Select the area to copy
(with the mouse or the up and down arrows of the keyboard).
Click on Copy,
So the text is copied in the clip-board.
Put the cursor where you want to paste the text.
Click on Paste,
The text is pasted from the clip-board to the place you wished.

Cut :

To erase the selected text and put it in the clip-board
in order to paste it somewhere else.

Copy :

To copy the selected text in the clip-board.

Paste :

To paste the text of the clip-board
to the place where the cursor is,
(nevertheless the text remains in the clip-board).

Erase :

To erase the selected text without putting it in the
clip-board.

Select all :

To select the whole text either to cut, to paste,
or to erase it.

Search :

To search a word or a group of words in the text.

Replace :

To search a word or a group of words in the text
and replace it.

How to Drag and Drop :

The Copy-Paste method does not maintain the page-setting
(bold type, underlined words, fonts,...)
but another method enables to keep it.
Put the two software programs near or
on one another,
select the text to copy.
Put the cursor of the mouse on the selected area,
press the left button of the mouse and maintain it pressed.
Then a rectangle appears indicating that the area is
selected for the Drag and Drop.
Put the cursor where you want, for instance
in the main window of the translation software,
and drop the button of the mouse.
Then the text is copied automatically from a software
to the other.

Use of the right button of the mouse :

When you click with the right button of the mouse
in one of the three windows
you will see a pop-up menu that recapitulates the main
functions of the Edition menu : Cut, Copy, Paste,
Erase, Select all.

The Translation menu

To translate a text you must choose the way you want it
to be translated, for instance from French into English.
Then select the text you want to translate :
- all the text,
- the selected part of the text,
- the text in the clip-board :
in that case the translation will appear in the clip-board
instead of the original text at the end of the translation,
- the sentence on which the cursor is,
- an outer file.

A screen shows the various possible connotations.
Select the connotation of the text to translate among
the suggested ones.
You can indicate several. For example : Aviation + Military,
or none.
An analysis of the text is carried out during the translation
to refine the chosen connotations.
Consequently if you do not know what the text is about,
the software itself will determine the connotations of the text
even if you did not indicate any.
After the translation the selected connotations are kept
for the next translations.

Then the translation begins.
The text appears one sentence after another
as well as the translation made for each sentence.
There are four stages in the analysis of the text
(the second one is by far the longest)
and a synthesis stage.

Click on Ok to make the 3 windows appear with the executed
translation.

Once the translation is over you can add
the words not found directly in the personal dictionary
by clicking on the command named
"Insertion of the words not found into the personal dictionary".
If you have added those words in the personal dictionary, you
can restart the translation and they will be translated correctly.

The program creates two files that are
in the same repertory as the original text.
The first one contains the executed translation only.
The second one contains the sentences to translate
as well as their translation.
That way you can check the executed translations
and visualise the possible changes to bring about.
The extension of this file is .VER .
See chapter "revision of translated texts".

So that the software can determine the end of the sentences,
the latter have to end by a full-stop.
The letters or sequences of letters under-mentioned can also
be considered as the end of a sentence :
?   !   ;   :   .....
more than 5 blank spaces,
a blank line,
a drawing.

When a word is not translated
because it was not identified during the analysis
of the original sentence, this word
is indicated in square brackets  {word}.

This word can be correct but not present
in the basic dictionaries. You can
add this word in the dictionaries using the function
named "enrichment of dictionaries".

The words in capital letters can cause
problems. Indeed the vowels marked with an accent
lose their accentuation with capital letters and
this can lead to some ambiguities.
Ex: PECHE can be the capital form of :
pêche, pêché, péché or pèche.

It is possible not to translate some parts of texts.
See the function named Words marking in the Tools menu.

The words in square brackets { } are not translated.
They are only written just as they were.
This is useful to prevent addresses
from being modified.

The words in square brackets [ ] are completely ignored
in order to write in the original text some commentaries
that will not be translated.

Translate a text via the clip-board :

Once the text is translated it will be put in the clip-board
and you will be able to use it for word processing
by using the Paste function
in the Edition menu.
(To put a text from your usual word processor
into the clip-board : select the part of the text you
want to translate. Then in the Edition menu use the Copy function,
and the selected text will be copied in the clip-board.)
See the function named Visualisation of the clip-board.

To translate a text :

Put the text you want to translate in the clip-board :
select the part of the text to translate
and use the Copy function in the Edition menu.
Click on the function you want,
for example Translation from English into French.
You now enter the translation software.
Once the translation is over you will find it in the
clip-board. You can paste it in your text
when you use the Paste function in the Edition menu.

Translation of an outer file :

- indicate the disk unit where your file to translate can be found,
- indicate the repertory where the file to translate can be found,
- indicate the type of name of the files to translate,
  Ex: *.* , *.FREN , *.TXT ...,
- select the file to translate among the visible ones.

Once you have indicated the data, click on Ok.

Then the software asks you to indicate the name
of the text once it is translated.

The Spelling menu :

To check the spelling of a text select the way of spelling
you want, for example in English.
Then select the text you want to spell :
- all the text,
- the selected part of text,
- the text in the clip-board,
- the sentence where the cursor is,
- an outer file.

It is very useful to check the spelling of the texts to translate
to avoid translating texts including spelling
mistakes.

The words considered as wrong are written in red
and the unknown words beginning with a capital letter
in green. Those words are often proper nouns.

The software offers valid words to correct
unknown ones.

It is possible to write words directly in the personal
spelling dictionaries.

Check the spelling of a text via the clip-board :

Once the text is spelt correctly it will be put in the clip-board
and you will be able to use it for word processing
by using the Paste function
in the Edition menu.
(To put a text from your usual word processor
into the clip-board : select the part of text you
want to translate. Then in the Edition menu use the Copy function,
and the selected text will be copied in the clip-board.)
See the function named Visualisation of the clip-board.

To check the spelling of a text :

Put the text to spell in the clip-board :
select the part of the text to spell
and use the Copy function in the Edition menu.
Click on the function you want,
for example Spelling in English.
Once the spelling is over you will find it in the
clip-board. You can paste it in your text
when you use the Paste function in the Edition menu.

To check the spelling of an outer file :

- indicate the disk unit where the file to spell can be found,
- indicate the repertory where the file to spell can be found,
- indicate the type of name of the files to spell,
  Ex: *.* , *.FREN , *.TXT etc,
- select the file to spell among those
  in the repertory.

Then the text appears and the spelling begins.

The basic dictionaries contain about
60 000 words for each language to which are added
the words deduced by algorithms : conjugated forms,
feminine and plural forms...

The lexical base of spelling dictionaries
is different from the one of translation dictionaries.
So some words known by some dictionaries
can be unknown by other ones.

The spelling checker is useful
for the checking of words spelling.
But there are no syntactical analyses
(place and concordance of words),
so some spelling mistakes can remain
and generate problems during the translation.

The Revision menu :

It opens the Translation and Revision windows
if they are closed.

The Dictionaries menu :

This menu gathers the functions linked with the
dictionaries maintenance.

Word to word dictionary :

It enables to have the translation of a single word.

You also have access to the word to word dictionary
when you double-click on a word.

Select the dictionary.

When the original word or its translation have various
possible grammatical types all of them are indicated.

Then you can insert the translation in the text
or else copy it in the clip-board.

If it is a verb you can conjugate it.

The word to word dictionary can also appear in the
form of a tools bar.

Enrichment of dictionaries :

You can enrich the basic dictionaries.

A window sums up the list of the words not found
in the texts translated previously.
The name of the original text is indicated in square
brackets [ ] next to the word not found.
Click on the word and it is then copied in the New word window.

Enter the new word or new phrase,

if it is a verb : it must be at the infinitive,
if it is a noun : it must be in the singular.

Enter the translation of the new word or
new phrase,

if it is a verb : it must be at the infinitive,
if it is a noun : it must be in the singular.

Then indicate the grammatical function of the word
in the source language,
Ex: masculine singular noun.

A message asks you if you wish to add those words
in the symmetrical dictionary.

Then indicate the connotation of the word,
You can also indicate several,
Example : Electronics + Medicine.

Connotations are optional.
You are not compelled to indicate them.

The words you will enter have the priority over
the words already in the basic dictionary.
So this function enables you to change
translation of a word.

The personal dictionary files are independent of the
basic dictionary files. Consequently you can erase
and reinstall the basic dictionaries without losing
your personal dictionaries.
So when the basic dictionaries supplied with the
software are updated you can install the new
dictionaries without any problem.

The name of the personal dictionary files is written that way :
DIC-PERS.GF for example for the personal dictionary
from English into French.

When a word can have several syntactical functions,
you have to indicate all of them.
Example : CLEAN     adjective PROPRE
CLEAN     adverb PROPREMENT
CLEAN     verb NETTOYER

Edition of the personal translation dictionaries :

You can visualise or modify the personal
translation dictionaries.

You can modify the grammatical functions of words.

You can modify the connotations of words.

You can indicate several connotations.
Example : Electronics + Medicine.

Connotations are optional.
You are not compelled to indicate them.

Edition of the personal spelling dictionaries :

You can visualise and modify the personal
spelling dictionaries.

Erasing of dictionaries :

You may need to free some place
on your hard disk because dictionaries
are very cumbersome.
The solution is to erase the dictionary files.
A function enables to erase the dictionary files
because they are semi-protected
and you cannot erase them with D.O.S.
standard commands.
When the software needs dictionaries but does not
find them you are asked to put the CD-ROM
in the CD-reader. Then the installation of the
missing dictionaries will be accomplished.
The personal dictionary files are independent
of the basic dictionary files ; so you can
erase the basic dictionaries without
losing your personal dictionaries.

The Tools menu :

This menu gathers the various tools functions.

Statistics :

It gives data about the text in progress :
- number of lines,
- number of words,
- number of characters (spaces included),
- number of characters (spaces not included),
- number of sentences.

The tools bar :

A pop-up tools bar recapitulates the functions
of the software.
This tools bar always appears on the first ground of the software
programs. You can change its place as you please.
During the installation it is put in the same group
as the software.

Display in tools bar /
Classical display :

You can change the display of the software into the
form of a tools bar to use it with another software.

This tools bar always appears on the first ground and
can be superposed on the other software programs.
Every function of the software is accessible.
Only the display is different.

When it has a tools bar form you can come back to
the standard display.

Integration to other software programs :

The software can be used when you work with
your usual word processor or your spreadsheet.

With Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel :

Click on Integration to Word or Integration to Excel,
the software concerned starts and gives the required macros.
A menu as well as a tools bar recapitulate
the functions of the software.

Menu with Word :

Tools bar with Word :

Menu with Excel :

Tools bar with Excel :

The software may ask you to confirm :
click on "activate macros".

This is a security function because macro-commands can
contain computer viruses.
So Word and Excel advise you to be careful with macros.
Those supplied with our software are not risky at all and
they contain no virus. You can use them fearlessly.

You can also drive the software programs and then start the macros :

From Microsoft Word :
Open the TRADUC.DOT file that contains the
macros and tools bars.
You can also copy this file in
Word starting repertory,
for example : ...\...\OFFICE\START\ .

From Microsoft Excel :
Copy the PERSO.XLS file that contains the
macros in Excel starting repertory,
for example : ...\...\OFFICE\XLOPEN\ ,
(or copy those macros in the PERSO.XLS file
that already exists).
Open the TRADUC.XLA file that contains the
macros and tools bars.

Visualisation of the clip-board :

It gives the content of the clip-board.

It is possible to translate texts in the clip-board
(see the translation function),
or to check the spelling of texts in the clip-board
(see the spelling function).
So it is useful to visualise the content of the clip-board.

You can also erase the clip-board.

Fonts :

To modify the style of the text in progress :
- fonts,
- style (standard, italics, bold type, underlined),
- size,
- colour.

Words marking :

It is possible not to translate some parts of the texts.

The words in square brackets { } are not translated.
They are only written in the translation just as
they were. This is useful to prevent the adresses
from being modified.

The words in square brackets [ ] are completely ignored
in order to write in the original text some commentaries
that will not be translated.

Select a text area with the mouse ;
then indicate the features of this area.

Special characters :

When you work with foreign languages you need
letters that you cannot obtain directly from the
keyboard. Two tools bars enable to have those
letters directly available.
Click on the required letter that will be inserted
in the text of the active window.

The two bars have the same functionalities.
Only the display is different (because one is smaller than the other).

Conjugate a verb :

It enables to conjugate a verb.
Indicate the verb,
then select the Tense
and the Person.
Afterwards you can insert it in the text
or else copy it in the clip-board.

The Help menu :

The help concerning the software appears.

The Help menu recapitulates the whole manual.

When you click on "See the manual", you visualise the manual
in Word 97 format.
You can also see and print the manual
with the program named Visualisation and printing of the manual
that is in the programs group of The Translator.

The Translation window

The functions of the File, Edition, Tools and Help menus
from the Translation window are the same as in
the main window,
(see those functions for further information).

Import from the revision editor :

This function copies the text from the Revision
window towards the Translation window but keeps only
the translations and removes the original text.

The Revision window

The functions of the File, Edition, Tools and Help menus
from the Revision window are the same as in
the main window,
(see those functions for further information).

In the translation unknown words are written in red
and in square brackets { }.

Export to the translation editor :

This function copies the text from the Revision
window towards the Translation window but keeps only
the translations and removes the original text.

Revision of the translated texts :

The software generates translations with the best possible
quality but there are often changes to bring.
To modify a translated text the best process is
as follows :
Modify the translated file that has the following extension :  .VER,
It contains the sentences to translate and the translated sentences.
Then a function enables you to remove the original
sentences in square brackets [ ],
and only the translated sentences are kept.
Select the function named Revision of translated texts
in the main menu.
Then indicate the name of the file *.VER to process.
It appears in the text window.
Modify the translated sentences
and save the modified file.
The *.VER file is now saved with the changes.

Utilitarians :

Three utilitarian programs are supplied with the software :
- The software in the form of a tools bar,
- Visualisation of the manual,
- Uninstall the software.

Those programs are put in the same group of programs
as the main software and in the window created
on the desktop during the installation.

Visualisation and printing of the manual :

To visualise and print the manual.

Three formats are offered :
- Html to see the manual in an internet navigator,
- Word 97,
- Windows help.

The three files contain the same information.

This function is also available in the software
in the Help menu.

Uninstall the software :

To uninstall the software.

This utilitarian erases all the files
and the links to the software.

Examples :

During the software installation some files containing
short example sentences are copied in the same
repertory as the software.

Those files have a RTF, TXT and D.O.S. format.
The beginning of the example files indicates the
language of the examples :
FREN- for the French,
ENG- for the English,
SPA- for the Spanish.
Ex: FREN-1.RTF : first example file in French.

Modification of words :

It is possible to ask the software to modify
the translation of a word.
For example the translation from English into French
of  IT IS A DOG  will be  C'EST UN CHIEN.
But you may want to translate
CHIENNE instead of CHIEN,
Indeed there is one word only in English
but two in French.
You only need to indicate before this word and in
brackets the parameters you want to modify.
So the software will manage the sentence with the parameters
you have indicated and verbs will be agreed...
For example : IT IS A [gender=1] DOG
will give  C'EST UNE CHIENNE.
You can also indicate only the first letter of the parameter,
for example  G=  instead of  GENDER= .

Examples :

They go to [Capital letter=2] PARIS.
Ils vont à Paris.

They buy the [n=0] horses.
Ils achètent le cheval.

His name is [equivalent=michel] Mike.
Son nom est Michel.
